The Pond

Newtopia is a small UK wildlife pond built to feel as natural as possible.

The aim is not a formal garden feature. It is a living corner of the garden where newts, frogs, insects, birds, plants, water and weather all have a place.

Design principles

• Soft, natural edges.
• Plenty of shallow margins.
• Hiding places for newts and frogs.
• Oxygenating and marginal plants.
• Clear water without making the pond sterile.
• Quiet places to sit and watch.

Why it matters

A wildlife pond does not need to be large to become important. Even a small pond can become a whole world.
